Course summary

Circle 1 is an engaging course designed to introduce young learners to foundational algebraic thinking and essential problem-solving skills. Aligned with Common Core Standards for Grades 1 and 2, this course is ideal for students ages 5 to 7 who can count, add, and subtract within 20. Through interactive lessons, students will strengthen their addition and subtraction skills, learn place value up to 100, and begin borrowing and carrying in calculations. Circle 1 incorporates problem-solving exercises, logic puzzles, and friendly competition-style challenges to keep young minds active, inspired, and excited about learning math!

Focus Areas at this Level

Concepts, skills, and learning tools students see in this course include, but are not limited to:

  • Comparing and counting with numbers up to 100
  • Carrying and borrowing with adding and subtracting under 100
  • Defining shapes and units of measurement
  • Problem-solving skills, logic puzzles, algebraic and geometric thinking, competition-style problems

Expected Outcomes

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Counting, Comparing, and Operations: Work with numbers up to 100, including counting, comparing, carrying, and borrowing in addition and subtraction.
  • Foundations of Place Value and Number Properties: Understand place value, identify odd/even numbers, double and halve numbers, and recognize simple fractions.
  • Introduction to Equations and Data Interpretation: Solve for missing values in simple equations, and collect and interpret data using tally marks and bar graphs.
  • Geometry and Measurement Basics: Define shapes, learn units of measurement, and find the area of basic rectangular and compound shapes.

Pre Requisites

Students registering for this course should be comfortable with the following Math:

  • Adding and Subtracting with 2-digit numbers up to 20
  • Counting by 1: up to 20 and back down to 0
  • Comparing numbers and size (equal, greater than and less than)
  • Place value using ones and tens

Course Itinerary

  • Counting and Place Value (3 weeks): Learn to count and understand place value concepts with numbers up to 100, differentiating between numerals, digits, and numbers.
  • Ordering and Basic Operations (6 weeks): Explore greater than/less than, ordinals, and addition/subtraction using number lines, tools, and stacking algorithms, including carrying and borrowing.
  • Patterns and Fractions (7 weeks): Identify and create patterns in numbers, shapes, and nature; introduce odd/even numbers, halves, doubles, and basic fractions on number lines.
  • Equations, Data, and Measurement (5 weeks): Solve simple equations, gather data with tallies and bar graphs, and learn measurement basics for length, weight, and capacity.
  • Time, Money, and Geometry (9 weeks): Understand time (AM/PM, clocks, calendars), count with dollars and cents, and explore 2D/3D shapes, composite shapes, and areas.
