After-school math and Problem solving
Grades K-12. Online learning
Engaging Math Circles in San Jose, CA offers an after-school enrichment program that caters to grades K to 8. Lessons are presented in small groups that allow for both individualized teaching and peer collaborative learning environment.
We are an after-school custom math education program with small live online classes, designed to help children K-12 strengthen their math skills. Our mission is to lay the foundation for our students' long-term academic success.
Children who come to us develop a new kind of confidence in their learning abilities and often stay with us for many years. That is our ultimate goal - to engage our students, feed their natural curiosity, and empower them to not only solve complex problems but to seek out new challenges and enjoy them.
We love math, and we know your children will too! Once our students see that they are fully capable of solving complex problems on their own, math becomes an elaborate but solvable puzzle. As students realize their potential and apply themselves, their growing confidence affects other areas of their lives.
Investigative Learning techniques are at the core of our approach. Rather than giving students the answers, we guide and encourage them to find solutions independently and as a group. We facilitate discussions, giving students opportunities to formulate and communicate their thoughts as they teach and help each other.
The beauty of mathematics is in the fact that if you can understand “why” something works, you can always recreate the “how”. Our younger students learn through hands-on activities and games as they model abstract concepts of mathematics with tangible models. Older students learn to model and prove math using all current scientific tools and mathematical language.
Our rigorous faculty selection process ensures that your children are always in good hands at EMC. All of our instructors hold high STEM degrees and know how to work with kids. Positive Discipline and Investigative Learning techniques are at their approach. Their objective is to gently and expertly guide students towards "aha!" moments and create opportunities for students to make discoveries and better decisions on their own. They facilitate discussions, giving each student opportunities to formulate and communicate their thoughts and come up with their own solutions.
We make sure the students continue their progress outside of our classrooms by giving each parent the tools to support their kid’s learning objectives at home. Because of this care and personal attention, our students go on to win math competitions, achieve higher grades at school, and become more confident and accomplished students overall.
We pay close attention to our students' progress, so we always know which group is the best fit for a new student. After a one-on-one evaluation, we'll find the best class for your child regardless of when they join. With flexible registration and payments, students can start, change, or leave our programs at their convenience.
We believe that teaching and learning math is a fun and deeply rewarding journey. We love math, and we know that your children will too!

EMC offers a systematic program that covers all school requirements and goes beyond them. We expose our students to the advanced concepts from Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, Combinatorics, and other branches of high mathematics. In addition, we work on solving non-standard and challenging problems from a variety of math competitions. Our students participate in Math Kangaroo, MOEMS, MathCounts, and other math tournaments, bringing home fantastic results.
Children are inherently curious and love to explore on their own. When the students believe in their own power of discovery, they crave new knowledge. The driving force behind EMC lessons is to make math interesting and exciting by showing students that they can solve complex problems. EMC uses a unique Investigative Learning approach to foster independent math thinkers in all grade levels. Investigative Learning immerses students in the wonderful world of mathematics by the way of asking thought-provoking questions. Students are guided to discover the answers on their own instead of memorizing the instructor’s presentation. Kids internalize the material better, as well as gain confidence in their own thinking and problem-solving skills.
Math is more than just a set of rules, templates, and arithmetic calculations. At EMC, we believe that thorough understanding of mathematical concepts is an integral step in the development of mathematical intuition. Automatization of arithmetic skills should happen after a solid foundation of core principles has been laid. The beauty of mathematics is in the fact that if you can understand “why” something works, you can always recreate the “how”.At younger ages, we enrich the learning process with hands-on activities, manipulatives, and games, allowing young minds to engage all senses in the process of modeling abstract concepts of mathematics with tangible models. Younger children investigate and prove their theories with hands-on experiments. Older students learn to model and prove math using all current scientific tools and mathematical language. They become fluent in using graphs, diagrams, algebraic expressions, equations and their like, to solve problems.
Small class sizes enable EMC instructors to focus on individual strengths and weaknesses of each student. Our structure and teaching philosophy provide a unique opportunity to challenge the most advanced students while boosting the confidence and building the skills of the kids who struggle. Our students are inspired by their peers in the group. They rise up to challenges, supporting, learning from, and teaching each other. Our classroom is a playground where leadership skills can be practiced alongside collaborative team work.
The fun and supportive environment of EMC provides students with a unique opportunity to examine their own thought process. They discover their personal strengths and weaknesses. They are not afraid to make mistakes, ask for help when they need it, or admit they are stuck. Kids learn to independently read and understand math texts. They learn how to self-advocate when presenting solutions to the classroom. During each lesson, students engage in meaningful discussions with their peers. These interactions teach them to effectively formulate and communicate their own thoughts.
We believe that teaching math is fun and learning math is exciting, and our students quickly catch on to this enthusiasm. Smiles are abundant, confidence skyrockets, great results are carried over to school classrooms. It is a marvelous transformation for all, and we are privileged to be a part of the journey. We love math, and your children will too!
I think that working with a personal tutor is less effective than in a small group. Children need not just knowledge but also socialization and an environment conducive to learning. My daughter (9 years) took the summer Fun Math course at EMC. There were 5 people in her group and she had a fun teacher. I heard them laugh. They laughed - during a math class! I am happy with the results, it turned out to be a great alternative to summer camp.
We got unlucky with our school teacher, and Tom lost all interest in math during the year. I’m glad we found EMC for the summer! The interest came back, and excitement, and sparks in Tom’s eyes. He made friends in class, math enthusiasts like him. I recommend!
Summer math classes don’t sound so scary if it’s taught in a fun, playful way like EMC does it in their summer program. Had to convince my son to attend the first lesson but he joined the Zoom for the second one on his own) That’s a good indicator - thank you, EMC! We really liked Andy - he is a great teacher!
