Focus Areas at this Level

Concepts, skills, and learning tools students see in this course include, but are not limited to:

  • Adding, Subtracting with numbers up to 30 and counting with numbers up to 100
  • Recognizing and understanding patterns with and without numbers
  • Defining simple shapes and units of measurement
  • Problem-solving skills, logic puzzles, algebraic and geometric thinking, competition-style problems

Expected Outcomes

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Hands-On Counting Tools: Use of fingers, number lines, Cuisenaire rods, 10-frames, and dominoes to support counting skills.
  • Foundational Math Skills: Counting forward and backward by 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, and 10’s; addition and subtraction up to 30; and writing basic equations.
  • Understanding Relationships and Patterns: Comparing numbers, identifying missing values, and exploring fact families and visual patterns.
  • Introduction to Measurement and Geometry: Basic measurements (length, weight, temperature, time, currency) and recognizing shapes by properties and positions.

Pre Requisites

Students registering for this course should be comfortable with the following Math:

  • Counting to 20
  • The number zero and what it represents
  • Addition as putting together
  • Subtraction as taking away

Course Itinerary

  • Counting Tools (5 weeks): Explore numbers up to 10 using fingers, Cuisenaire rods, 10-frames, and dominoes to understand counting and basic addition.
  • Ordering Numbers (4 weeks): Learn ordinals, count up to 100, use number lines, and compare numbers with greater/less than concepts.
  • Number Sentences & Basic Operations (8 weeks): Write and solve addition/subtraction sentences up to 30, understand equality, and use addition and subtraction strategies.
  • Patterns, Equations, and Fact Families (7 weeks): Identify number patterns, skip counting, solve equations with missing values, and understand relationships in fact families.
  • Measurement, Time, and Shapes (10 weeks): Measure length, weight, temperature, learn time and money basics, and explore 2D/3D shapes and spatial relationships.
