Reflectional symmetry happens when something looks exactly the same on both sides of a line. That line is called the line of symmetry—it splits a shape into two equal parts that are mirror images of each other. You can imagine folding the shape along the line of symmetry—if both sides match perfectly, then it has reflectional symmetry. Many objects in nature, like butterflies, leaves, and even our faces, show this kind of symmetry!
You can find symmetry in everyday shapes too. A triangle, a heart, or a square often have one or more lines of symmetry. When you draw or fold along those lines, both sides line up perfectly. This makes symmetry an exciting way to see balance and beauty in math and in the world around you. Try drawing different shapes and see which ones fold evenly!
