Place Value Explained: Understanding Numbers Up to 1000

Place value helps us understand large numbers by breaking them down into hundreds, tens, and ones. With just one place, we can write numbers 0 through 9. But when we want to write numbers like 23 or 87, we need two places: one for tens and one for ones. The tens place tells us how many groups of ten a number has, while the ones place shows the remaining amount.

To write numbers up to 1000, we add a third place called the hundreds place, which tells us how many groups of 100 are in a number. For example, in the number 453, the 4 in the hundreds place means 400, the 5 in the tens place means 50, and the 3 in the ones place means 3. Our downloadable guide provides more examples and practice problems, making it easy to understand place value up to 1000. Download it below to start mastering place value!
